Revises Casino Game Center Law

The government of South Korea has announced a significant revision to their casino game center law.
Previously, the Koreans government issued licenses to build casino game centers for tourists only, limiting these casino game centers, generally located in five- star hotels and in international airports, to cities that have an international airport transfer center. The revision to the law will open the field somewhat, allowing casino game centers in all five- star hotels that have a significant enough number of potential non- Korean passport- holding casino game center patrons, regardless of whether they have an international airport transfer center. The government has set this number at approximately 30,000 potential foreign tourists.
Casinos that admit tourists only will be allowed in all five- star hotels with the appropriate foreign visitor quota as early as July. However, government officials say that this revision will not significantly increase the number of casinos in the country, since the large majority of five star hotels do not meet the visitor standards.
The Tourism Promotion Act, which contains the body of law that monitors casino game center activity, was revised at a cabinet meeting yesterday. The meeting was headed by Prime Minister Lee Hae-chan at the Central Government Complex.
